Business 101: Fighting Procrastination
Hello to all my business professionals!
As business owners, there will always be a time where procrastination will bite us in the behind. So when that happens, do you spray the “creative” spray to keep the lazy away.. or do you let it infest your craft? 🤷🏾♀️
I know, this all sounds super silly, but when you really put thought into how procrastination can literally kill your dreams, you have to wonder “how can I stop this from happening?”
Over the last few weeks, I put my event planning dream to the side - for no legitimate reason. Disappointed is not even the word that can describe how I feel about letting the lazy bug take over my entire creative process. Rather than sit and soak in the lackadaisical state-of-mind I became so familiar with, I followed a formula of tips + tricks on tackling “the enemy of success.”
#1: Find a less comfortable space to work
Occasions by Jade is a home-based event planning firm. What is synonymous with comfortable - HOME! That was one of my biggest challenges and what I learned over the course of time is if I really wanted to complete that proposal that was due one week ago 😒, or create a networking event to bring awareness to my company, I had to leave my comfortable couch. This tip is not intended for the entrepreneur who can get all their goals met by sitting at the dinning room table (if that’s you, teach me your ways!) - this tip is for those that love the idea of working from home but seemingly get nothing accomplished.
#2: Create a timeline for the day
This is the most obvious trick, yet the most overlooked. When I get that urge to create, I instantly take all my binders out and the hunger for success begins! I’m very visual, so to see my company binders filled with juicy event planning articles, inspiration, and DIY’s, I become overjoyed, yet overwhelmed. Creating a timeline for what I wanted to accomplish during the set hours I had available made me less distracted. I still to this DAY struggle with creating timelines before working on my business because I’m such a “gotta get it done NOW” type of person. So if you’re like me, before you get started, try and create a list of short-term goals you want to accomplish within a set time frame, what you need to update on your website, what kind of social media content you want to create, etc. - I promise you will find yourself working instead of stalling.
#3: Work with another business owner
#TeamWorkMakesTheDreamWork! And this is facts! I remember when me and a few close friends from college would sit in my living room and CREATE! When I tell you, we got so much accomplished by just working in the same creative space as one another, it was mind-blowing. Mind you, we were all working on our own individual brands in different industries. These were the best times and this is honestly one of the best tips to beat procrastination. Reach out to your photographer friend and see if they want to meet up at Panera Bread! The worst they can say is “no”. Link up with an event planner in your area and share ideas. Energy is contagious! I believe if you want to be successful, you have to be surrounded by successful people.
This outlines my tips + tricks. Short and sweet - just like me 💋 Get out of the habit of “I’ll do it tomorrow” and start doing it NOW!
